An established restaurant brand in the fast-casual dining segment was using Google Ads as a primary channel for online orders and local search. The brand already had strong recognition, physical locations, and steady customer interest, but advertising was failing to turn that interest into sustainable and profitable sales.
The main issue was not a lack of traffic, but inefficient use of it. Google Ads was generating volume, but with limited return, making the channel unprofitable and difficult to scale.

Situation Before Working Together

When the client came to us, their Google Ads account was generating results, but showed clear signs of inefficiency, a common pattern in restaurant advertising setups. Campaigns were capturing an overly broad range of searches – from general interest in healthy food to weakly relevant queries that rarely resulted in actual orders. The local component was not clearly structured, making it difficult to reach users with genuine intent to order from a specific location.

At the same time, the algorithm was optimized primarily toward action volume rather than real online orders. This led to a significant portion of the budget being spent without a clear contribution to revenue. As a result, the account generated a high number of conversions, but with low value per conversion and weak return on ad spend.

As a consequence, Google Ads was delivering poor performance:

Our Approach

Our approach focused on changing the way Google Ads served the business. The core strategic decision was to shift the focus from volume to the real value of each order.
The key question was no longer “how many conversions are we getting,” but which of those conversions actually resulted in real orders and revenue. For a multi-location restaurant business, this required tighter control over search queries, clearer local logic, and optimization driven by value rather than activity.
On a practical level, this strategy led to a complete restructuring of campaigns around local, high-intent search. This allowed ads to reach users with a genuine readiness to place an order. Broad and weakly relevant queries were reduced to minimize traffic “noise” and free up budget for searches with higher commercial value.
At the same time, a clearer separation between branded and non-branded searches was introduced, providing better visibility into the true contribution of each campaign. Optimization goals were shifted away from abstract “actions” toward real order value, and budget allocation became far more efficient—prioritizing campaigns with proven revenue impact. Instead of chasing maximum reach at any cost, the focus moved to demand quality and the value of each completed order.

Results

A year later, with a lot of optimizations Google Ads demonstrated a fundamental shift in performance as a channel. With a better-structured account and significantly stronger signals feeding the algorithm, advertising began generating real revenue rather than simple activity. Strong results made it possible to gradually increase the budget, which in turn completed the process of stabilizing and scaling the channel. Spend increases were never an end in themselves, but were based on proven efficiency, improved algorithm signals, and a clear understanding of which campaigns delivered real value.

After optimization (June 2025):

  • Ad spend: $6,142
  • Conversions: 3,425
  • Average cost per conversion: $1.79
  • Total conversion value: $63,538
  • ROAS: 10.34

This project clearly demonstrates that Google Ads can be a highly effective channel for restaurant businesses when managed with a focus on real user intent rather than traffic volume. Success did not come from a one-time optimization or aggressive budget increases, but from a consistent process of structuring, refining search queries, and building clear, high-quality signals for the algorithm.
The gradual improvement in efficiency made it possible to scale the channel with confidence, without compromising return on ad spend. Budget increases were the result of proven performance, not an attempt to compensate for weak results with higher spend. This turned Google Ads into a predictable and sustainable source of online orders that can be planned and grown in line with business objectives.
